GLOSSORY OF MMO TERMS AND ACRONYMS


 


At the suggestion of some community members, we will be compiling a Glossary of sorts to help players that are new to either MMO gaming or The Elder Scrolls series familiarize themselves with some of the common jargon that will be used when discussing ESO. Hopefully this can serve as a reference point if you see something you don’t recognize in conversation. I anticipate this list perhaps getting fairly lengthy, so to keep things organized I’ll partition it into several sections.

General MMO Terms


 



  • AoE – “Area of effect” damage which strikes it’s original target as well as any nearby enemies. AoE fields are typically circular; however, conal and linear (rectangular) AoEs also exist.

  • Aggro –  Used as a verb or adjective, describes the action of an enemy turning attention towards you in a negative way. One can also obtain aggro outside the game, such as wife/husband, girlfriend/boyfriend, or parent aggro.

  • Alt – Meaning another character someone plays other than their ‘main character’

  • Attribute (Stat) – The core physical statistics of your player character.

  • Bot – An automated program that runs the game to perform a repetitive action.

  • Buff – A beneficial magical effect which enhances your abilities (can be temporary or permanent).

  • Camp(ing) – The act of killing a player in PvP, then lurking near the respawn area in order to kill the same player repeatedly.

  • Critical Hit (Crit) – An attack that deals additional damage, often determined by a percentage chance on attack.

  • CC – “Crowd control”, is a method of preventing enemies from taking actions in combat. CC is generally categorized as “hard” (CC is not broken by further damage) or “soft” (further damage will break the effect). Some common CC types are:

    • Stun – total inability to take action (typically short duration)

    • Mez – also known as “sleep”, prevents enemy action but broken by damage (typically longer duration)

    • Snare – movement speed impairment

    • Root – complete inability to move, but actions may be taken “in-place”

    • Polymorph – temporarily transmogrifying an enemy into a helpless form like a sheep, squirrel, or bird.



  • Class – The basic archetype of your player character, in ESO these are Dragonknight, Nightblade, Templar, and Sorcerer.

  • Debuff – A detrimental magical effect which weakens your character (usually temporary).

  • DPS – “Damage per second”, typically your average per-second output over a 60 second encounter

  • DKP – Dragon kill points. Often used in raiding guilds to award players for downing bosses, or progressing through a scripted encounter. DKP is normally used to purchase items that drop during the raid.

  • DoT – Damage over time. A offensive ability that deals damage to an enemy over an extended period of time.

  • DR – “Diminishing Returns”, or more correctly, diminishing marginal returns.  Refers to the economic concept under which the more you have of something, the less additional benefit you receive from procuring more of it.  In MMOs, this most commonly refers to the obvious example of stats providing less benefit as stack more of them (the threshold at which they become uneconomical to stack being called a soft cap, and the point at which you receive zero benefit being called a hard cap), and also to systems under which players who are repeatedly subjected to CC effects in PvP are only affected by them in increasingly small durations within a certain time period.

  • Epic – A quality of item that is difficult to obtain and are usually very powerful. Normally found in difficult scripted PvE encounters.

  • Experience (EXP or XP). Normally used to advance a player in levels, is gained from doing actions such as quests, exploring, and killing mobs.

  • Farm(ing) – The act of killing a particular kind of mob over and over again in order to obtain a specific item. Also can be referred to collecting or harvesting a type of resource found in the world.

  • Gear – The general term for all the items that a player “equips” on their character to contribute to their stats or attributes, such as weapons, armour, rings, necklaces and other accessories.

  • Griefer – A player that enjoys inflicting pain/annoyance on others.

  • GM – Guild Master, or Game Master. Guild Master, the person who leads a guild. Game Master, a person who works for the company of the game you’re playing, and assists players inside the game with issues they may encounter.

  • Imba – Imbalanced.  Used to refer to a class, skill, or other factor being unfairly over-powered.  See: OP.

  • Instance – A copy of a particular dungeon, normally refers to PvE encounters.

  • Kite – The action of a player keeping aggro on a particular mob or mobs, and running around in a organized fashion (should be at least), letting the mobs trail behind them.

  • Line of Sight (LOS) – A requirement of most abilities, so that the given player or monster must be able to see the target. Also refers to the combat strategy of deliberately getting out of sight of an enemy archer or spell-caster.

  • Loot – The coin or items dropped from a mob or chest.

  • Minmax – A strategy in character development of minimizing undesirable traits while maximizing desirable ones

  • MMO – Massively multiplayer online, typically short for MMORPG (see RPG)

  • Mob – Refers to a monster NPC, originally short for “mobile” enemies in the original generation of online games.

  • Nerf – The act of developers reducing the stats, damage, or mechanics of a particular class or mob in order to make it less powerful.

  • Nuke – A large hard hitting ability; normally refers to mages or other magic type classes.

  • NPC  - Non-player character, any in-game actor controlled by the server.

  • Patrol (Pat) – Refers to a npc mob that is programmed to walk a specific path.

  • Pet – A summoned companion to a player character. Pets can be purely cosmetic (non-combat), or active in combat. The player may be able to issue limited commands to his or her pet. Certain classes may have access to multiple pets at any given time.

  • Teleport (Port) – Refers to any type of fast travel, that includes instant transportation.

  • OP – Overpowered, when a class, skill, or other factor is considered to be unfairly balanced.  See: Imba.

  • Powerlevel – A player who is assisted by higher level players to level quicker than is intended.

  • Proc – Programmed random occurrence. Refers to the benefit of increased attributes, or combat efficiency that occurs randomly when an item is used or strikes, and/or an ability is used.

  • PvE – Player vs Environment. Gameplay that consists of only fighting npc mobs

  • PvP – Player vs. player combat

  • Raid – A PvE encounter that is normally difficult, and requires a large amount of players to complete. Usually consists of a number of bosses, and epics.

  • Regen – Regeneration. The act of a player gaining back a combat resource over time, such as health, stamina, or mana.

  • Respec – Used as a verb, to describe a player changing ones specialization.

  • Rez – Resurrect. The act of bringing a player who has died back to life.

  • Roll – Using the game’s integrated random number generator built into the game to simulate a dice roll. Often used as a method of arbitration for player disputes, loot allocation, and gambling.

  • RvR – “Realm vs. Realm”, a special form of large-scale team PvP combat with three competing factions

  • Reset – The occurrence whereby mobs who are “aggro’d” on a player lose that aggro’d status, and return to their default position.  Sometimes referred to as “de-aggroing”.

  • Solo – The act of adventuring by yourself, without a party of other players.

  • Squishy – Used as an adjective or noun to describe someone who cannot take much damage without dying, often used to refer to non-tanky classes such as DPS classes, or simply to someone who is undergeared defense-wise.

  • Train/training – An act (usually done when in a group in an instance) whereby one player (usually someone strong and hardy such as the tank) intentionally runs through any and all groups of mobs that lie on a particular path to a certain area.  This causes the mobs to aggro to him, allowing the other, squishier group members to run through behind him without dying OR having to kill the mobs.  Sometimes it will be necessary for the person training to run off to a corner and die, allowing the mobs to reset, after which they are resurrected by a team member.  Other times they will reset automatically once they are taken far enough away from their default position.  This is done to save time and/or resources for the group.  Sometimes, this can be used as a form of griefing to “train” mobs onto other players.

  • Bound – An adjective denoting that an item is permanently locked to a player character, and no longer trade-able. Variants include “Bound to Character” and “Bound to Account”. The process of binding most frequently occurs in two ways:

    • BoE – “Bind on equip”. An item becomes bound once it is first equipped by any character.

    • BoP – “Bind on pickup” – An item is immediately bound as soon as it enters a player’s inventory.



  • Spec – Your “specialization” path, typically refers to the collection of a character’s advancement choices.

  • Tick – (or pulse) A single application of the effect of a Damage over Time (DoT) or Heal over Time (HoT) ability. For example, if you apply a DoT to something that does 15 dmg over 5 seconds, this means that every tick does 3 dmg provided the ability ticks every 1 second.

  • Troll – Similar to griefer. Someone who takes pleasure in pranking or the misfortune of others.

  • Trinity – Refers to the three general categories of player roles in group combat:

    • Tank – Specializes in damage mitigation or avoidance, as well as management of enemy threat.

    • Healer – Specializes in restoring the health, stamina, and magicka of their allies. Healers frequently also focus on removing negative conditions from allies.

    • Damage – Also called “DPS” (not to be confused with the combat metric), specializes on dealing damage to enemies.



  • Twisting – The act of alternating between multiple pulsing or ticking abilities in order to cause them to overlap.

  • Twink – A alt character that is fed by a main character, which provides high-end gear, items, enchants and abilities, etc. (usually the same player) that would often take a lot of time to acquire. Usually refers to players in a PvP scenario.

  • Wipe – Refers to the action of an entire party dying during a PvE scripted encounter.

  • Zerg – Refers to a large group of people rushing in to kill a target. Is usually looked at negatively, taking no strategy or skill.

  • RPG – Role-playing game


 


Chat Vernacular


 



  • AFK – “Away from keyboard”. Used when a player decides to go afk for an extended period of time.

  • AFAK – “As Far As I Know”

  • AKA – “Also Known As”

  • BBS – “Be Back Soon”

  • Bio – A short break taken by a player to use the bathroom, or make a sandwich.

  • BRB – “Be right back”. Used as a more nondescript way to say you’ll be back momentarily.

  • BRT – “Be right there”. To let people know that you are on your way to meet them.

  • DC – Disconnect, referring to when a player loses their connection to the game servers.  See: LD

  • Gank – Used as a verb to describe the act of killing an enemy player in PvP, the person doing the ganking normally has an unfair advantage, such as higher level, or the player being afk.

  • PUG – “Pick up group”. A group formed in an impromptu fashion, usually with strangers.

  • Uber – Short for German “Über”, which in this context means “vastly superior”.

  • Woot – Means “way to go”, or “good job”.

  • WTB – “Want to buy”. Used to tell players you want to purchase a specific item.

  • WTS – “Want to sell”. Used to tell players you are offering an item for sale.

  • Scrub – Used as a insult to a bad player to tell them they have no skill.

  • LD – “Linkdead”. Used to describe a player that has lost internet or game connection.  This is an older term originating in EQ that is no longer commonly used.

  • LFG – “Looking for group”. Used by solo players to help find a party.

  • LFM – “Looking for member” / “Looking for more”. Used by group leaders to recruit more players to the party.

  • FTL – “For the lose”. Used to bemoan the player’s failure to accomplish something.

  • FTW – “For the win”. Used to celebrate the player’s success in accomplishing something.

  • OMW – “On my way”

  • OOC – “Out of character”. Used in RP to distinguish that the following sentence is spoken as the player, and not as the player character.

  • OOM – “Out of Magicka”. A statement to inform your group-mates that you have exhausted your Magicka reserves.

  • QQ –  Represents the tears that a player may or may not be actually having. Usually used as an insult to a player who is complaining about something in game.

  • Noob – A player who is new to the game, and knows very little about said game. Also used as an insult to someone, telling them they’re a bad player.

  • Ninja – Used as a verb and adjective to describe the action of a player taking loot that does not belong to them.

  • GTG – “Got to Go”, or “Good to Go”. Often a confusing term because of the contradictory contexts.

  • IMO (IMHO) – “In my (honest) opinion”.

  • IC

    • “In Character”. Used in RP to refer to an act or actions as being attributable to the RP character, and not OOC.

    • A phonetic spelling of “I see”
